noun
+
そのもの
means
~ itself
そのもの is used to emphasize the preceding noun. Where が would simply indicate grammatically that the noun is the subject, そのもの adds emphasis to indicate that it is the main issue at hand. Often this can conveniently be translated as '(the thing) itself' in English, for example:
ちしき
知識
そのもの
もくてき
目的
ない
Knowledge is not an end in itself.
Sometimes a slightly more involved way of emphasizing the subject is needed:
あれ
かた
しつれい
失礼
おも
いたい
ことそのもの
りかい
理解
できる
I think his manner of speaking is rude, but I can understand what it is he wants to say.
