The particle は is known as the 'topic marker' in Japanese. It is placed immediately after the topic of a sentence.
これ  は  本  です  。
Listen
これ です
これ ほん です
this (topic marker) book is .
This is a book.
This is the simplest sentence pattern in Japanese (see X は Y です  X is Y). これ is a pronoun meaning 'this'. は indicates that これ is the topic of the sentence (in this case, the topic is also the grammatical subject).
ほん
(book) is the object of our sentence, and です is a verb meaning 'is'.
Important note: although hiragana は (ha) is used for this particle, it is actually pronounced 'wa'.
