The word はやい means early or fast. In spoken language, these concepts are largely interchangeable in English, and the same is true in Japanese. In written Japanese, however, はやい can be written with two different kanji, depending on whether we are referring to speed or the passage of time:
速い - fast, rapid: used when referring to something's physical speed
かれ
わたし
たち
クラス
いちばん
一番
はや
ランナーです
He is the fastest runner in our class.
早い - early, quick: used when referring to how quickly or early something takes place
かれ
はや
きない

He does not get up early.
とき
たつって
はや
ものです
Time goes by very quickly, doesn't it?
In some cases both kanji are possible and would imply a different meaning. For example, 早い電車 would mean 'early train' whereas 速い電車 would mean 'fast train'.
