The topic marker は, in both English and Japanese, is actually pronounced 'wa'. Elsewhere the hiragana symbol は is pronounced 'ha'. This historical quirk is the result of slight changes in pronunciation of Japanese words over hundreds of years, along with changes in how Japanese words are transliterated in kana.
