Grammar detail: verb ば form + よかった

verb ば form
+ よかった
means 'I wish I'd done', or 'I should have done'.よかった is the past form of よい (good), so in English this construction would literally be translated as 'if I had done X, it would have been good'. Japanese does not have the pluperfect form (had done ~), and uses the simple past instead (did).
