Grammar detail: をする vs する
をする vs する
Tweet
My current mastery of this grammar:
It is not uncommon to see を between the noun and する in a sentence using a する verb. For example:
The extra を adds an emphasis to the noun the する verb comes from, rather than the action the する expresses in the sentence. In English this might be expressed by turning the verb into a noun and using an extra verb such as 'do':
べんきょう 勉強 する to study | べんきょう 勉強 をする to do (some) studying |
したく 支度 する to prepare | したく 支度 をする to make preparations |
そうじ 掃除 する to clean | そうじ 掃除 をする to do (the) cleaning |
でんわ 電話 する to phone | でんわ 電話 をする to make a phone call |
Note that the additional を can only be used in this way with a regular する noun. It cannot be used with adverbs such as さっぱりする or modified verbs such as
どう
動
ずる. It also cannot be used if the する verb already takes an object with を (although it may be possible to replace the first を with の), as in for example 部屋を掃除する ➜ 部屋の掃除をする.More information / references
