のです or んです
is used to emphasize the content of the phrase, or to soften the presentation. Either ん or の is acceptable - ん is slightly more casual.
The phrase can be a complete sentence (with plain form verb):
どうやって
つく
です
Can you give me the recipe?
わたし
こうちょう

せんせい

自身
あったです
I met the principal himself.
もし

If I had enough money, I could buy it.
Or an い adjective:
