のです or んです
is used to emphasize the content of the phrase, or to soften the presentation. Either ん or の is acceptable - ん is slightly more casual.
The phrase can be a complete sentence (with plain form verb):
どうやって
つく
です
Can you give me the recipe?
わたし
こうちょう
校長
せんせい
先生
じしん
自身
あったです
I met the principal himself.
もし
わたし
かね
っていれば
それ
える
です
If I had enough money, I could buy it.
Or an い adjective:
くろ
くない
です
Isn't it black?
Or a noun or な adjective (in which case the form is な adjective / noun + なのです):

Note: のです is not to be confused with ので.
