Grammar detail: ん contraction of の
ん contraction of の
143 words
My current mastery of this grammar point:
In certain situations, the particle の can be contracted to ん, especially (but not exclusively) in colloquial speech. Some common examples include:
- ので ➜ んで
- のです ➜ んです
This example illustrates the most common use of のです / んです - to 'soften' the sentence slightly. It would be grammatically correct to say 何を読んでいますか, but the form used here is a little more friendly and natural.
- のだけど ➜ んだけど
- のだから ➜ んだから
This example demonstrates a characteristic use of んだから. While it would be grammatically correct to say 昨夜あんなに飲んだからね, the longer version implies that the topic is something the listener already knows about - in this case, rather like a form of 'I told you so'. Generally, んだから is used instead of plain から when the topic is something already known to both speaker and listener.
