答える and 応える are both read こたえる, and
こた
え (an answer) and
こた
える (to answer) are both extremely useful words, among the first you will encounter in Japanese.
As with many Japanese words, however, subtly different usages of the same Japanese word (in this case こたえる) are written in different ways.
答える is used when referring to answering a question:
質問に答えるanswer a question
アンケートに答えるfill in a questionnaire
応える is used in the sense of 'responding to' something. In English this can also use the word 'answer' (eg answer the call of nature), but a better word might be appropriate for a given context.
要望に応えるrespond to (a) demand
期待に応えるfulfill (an) expectation
