Reading ungrammatical kanji in titles and signs

On occasion, you will encounter a kanji included in a book title, sign, or poem which is included for its meaning, but not as part of a word in modern Japanese. How should you read the kanji in such situations? Should you use an
おんよ
音読
み, as you would expect to do if the kanji was part of a
じゅくご
熟語
(compound word)? Or should you use a suitable
くんよ
訓読
み, an appropriate Japanese word, even though it means adding kana which would normally be included as おくりがな?
The answer is ... it actually doesn't matter! Some native speakers take one approach, and some take the other. You should do whatever comes most naturally to you! If you are learning kanji, try and do both - it will help you remember the readings of the kanji you are studying even more thoroughly.
Here's an example from the Joy o' Kanji essay on 震:
ひがしにほんだいしんさい
東日本大震災
ふっこう
復興

Pray for Japan to Rebuild After the Great East Japan Earthquake
Should you read 祈 as き (the
おんよ
音読
み), or as いのる, the most common word using the
くんよ
訓読
み?
Clearly the meaning here is 'pray for'. However, grammatically this sentence is odd in any case - it doesn't follow Japanese word order; we would expect the verb at the end. 〜のために
いの
る is one common approach; it would be even more common to see 〜へ
いの
りを. So this is not a 'Japanese sentence' per se - it's essentially a set of kanji that convey a meaning. If you were reading this aloud, or to yourself, it would be perfectly fine to use either approach.
