Quick Start Guide: Automatic Mastery

Kanshudo tracks your 'mastery' of every kanji, word and grammar point in Japanese as you use the system. Every item is assigned a number from 0 to 4 which represents your mastery of that item. The totals are then combined and used to give you an overall view of your progress in your kanji, word and grammar mastery wheels. Along with study points, your mastery data also determines your Japanese Mastery Level, displayed in your Dashboard.
If you are just beginning Japanese, Kanshudo will present the most useful things for you to learn first - for example, we'll start with hiragana and katakana, progress to simple kanji, words and grammar, and so on. However, if you already know some Japanese, as you use Kanshudo, you will naturally be interacting with kanji, words and grammar that are more advanced. Kanshudo will notice this, and will infer that you are already know the more basic kanji, words and grammar.
When this happens, you may start to see study recommendations in your Dashboard letting you know that you can automatically set your mastery for various items. For example, if you start studying the Beginner Lessons, Kanshudo will soon suggest that you mark the kana as fully or partially mastered if they are not already.
If you see one of these study tasks, you can either let Kanshudo automatically set the mastery for you, or you can ignore the recommendation. If you ignore it, it won't come up again for a while. The advantage of letting Kanshudo set your mastery for items that you know is that Kanshudo can help determine the most useful *new* material to show you in your study recommendations.
If you don't like the idea of letting Kanshudo mark items as mastered without you seeing them first, or you just want to teach Kanshudo what you already know, there are several options. The fastest approach is a Quick Test, making sure that the option to 'Update mastery scores based on your answers' is set. You can use this link to set the parameters automatically: Quick Test to update mastery. Another approach is to do a Boost. Another is to do a Word Quiz or a Kanji Quiz.
