To find any kanji, first try to identify the components it is made up of. Once you have identified any component, search for it in any of three ways:
  1. Draw it in the drawing area
  2. Type the name in the text area
  3. Look for it in the list
Example: look up 漢
  • Notice that 漢 is made of several components: 氵 艹 口 夫
  • Draw any of these components (one at a time) in the drawing area, and select it when you see it
  • Alternatively, look for a component in the list. 氵 艹 口 each have three strokes; 夫 has four strokes
  • If you know the meanings of the components, type any of them in the text area: water (氵), grass (艹), mouth (口) or husband (夫)
  • Keep adding components until you can see your kanji in the list of matches that appears near the top.

The Kanshudo Component Builder can recognize any of the 416 components listed in the chart below the drawing area. Tips:
  • Draw a component in the center of the area, as large as you can
  • Try to draw the component as it appears in the kanji you're looking up
  • Don't worry about stroke order or number of strokes
  • Don't draw more than one component at a time

1. How to use the Reading Corner
Using the Reading Corner couldn't be simpler! Just click on any reading in the index. A dialog will appear with more information on the reading, including the difficulty level, source and length. Readings are ordered by difficulty, and currently are focused on new readers - we have more material in the works for intermediate and advanced readers.
The dialog includes several buttons. The INTRODUCTION button will give you more information on the text, including pointers to grammatical constructions or words to look out for. The READ NOW button will jump right into the text. The KANJI AND VOCAB button will take you to a summary of all words and kanji used in the text, from which you can quickly tag items as favorites and create flashcards.
The reading interface contains two sections. At the top of the screen you will see the whole text, sentence by sentence, with no furigana or other hints! (On smaller screens, a few sentences at a time will be displayed. The list button at the right of the text toggles between the full and partial views.) In the lower section, details of one sentence at a time will be shown - the Japanese with furigana, an English translation, and then all words, names and kanji. You can navigate to any sentence by clicking on it, or you can use the up and down arrows to move backwards or forwards one sentence at a time.
Your progress will be indicated at the top of the screen and also in the main index in the box for each reading. A reading is considered 'complete' when you have viewed details for each sentence. On completion of a reading, you will earn study points based on the length of the reading!
2. Integration with Satori Reader
