POI
あいうえお順、五十音順  kana order
201 words
As with the English alphabet, Japanese kana are usually presented in a standard order. The same order is used for both hiragana and katakana, and it's known as either あいうえお
じゅん
or
ごじゅうおんじゅん
五十音順
.
あいうえお is the sequence of sounds used with each consonant. The consonants themselves follow the order あ, か, さ, た, な, は, ま, や, ら and わ. So in other words, the full sequence is the あいうえお sequence, followed by the same sounds prefixed with 'k' - か, き, く, け and こ etc.
Interestingly, the あいうえお is used for the same reason that English language vowels are presented in the order a e i o u - it's easy for your mouth to move between the shapes required to make each sound. Try mouthing the sounds and notice how the change in shape required to move from one to the next is easy to make.
The full chart is named 五十音 because it is often presented in a five (あいうえお) by ten (あかさたなはまやらわ) grid. (In practice, some elements of the grid don't have corresponding kana, and sometimes ん appears in an extra column.)
For more information on kana, see our introduction to hiragana and our introduction to katakana.
