Point of interest: 定番 - ていばん vs じょうばん

POI
定番 - ていばん vs じょうばん
168 words
In modern Japanese, 定番 is almost always read ていばん, and it refers to something which doesn't deviate from the expected course - something which is standard or routine. It is actually a new word in Japanese, which was only introduced into the dictionary in 1986, evolving from a term used in the retail world for a 'fixed number' assigned to a product. As time has passed it has increasingly come to convey a sense of something that is somewhat stale or predictable. In this usage, we see the most common reading of 定, てい, and 番 used as in
ばんごう
番号
(number).
In older Japanese, 定番 was always read じょうばん, using the other main 'on' reading of 定, じょう, and with 番 used as in
でばん
出番
(turn). With this reading, 定番 was used to mean a person keeping guard, or the act of keeping guard. Today, the word regularly comes up to refer to guards in
えどじだいげき
江戸時代撃
, 'Edo period dramas' - the TV genre commonly known as 'samurai dramas'.
