旭日章 - Order of the Rising Sun
The
きょくじつしょう
, translated as the Order of the Rising Sun, is an extremely prestigious 'order', membership of which is bestowed on individuals by the Emperor as an award to recognize great contributions to Japanese culture.
Historically it was awarded to Japanese citizens, including Soichiro Honda, the founder of Honda Motors. Since 1981 several non-Japanese have received the award.
