The delightful expression
あぶら
る is commonly encountered in the workplace referring to someone who is loafing off, or pretending to work. It literally means 'sell oil' - how on earth did the idea of 'selling oil' become linked with pretending to work?!
In fact this expression dates from the
えど
江戸
じだい
時代
(the Edo Period, from 1603 to 1868). In those days, oil was used for
あんどん
行灯
(paper lanterns) as well as for hair (
かみあぶら
髪油
). Because it was made by hand, it was much thicker and more gelatinous (
ねばりけ
粘り気
つよ
い - literally 'strong stickiness') than it is today. Consequently, it was quite difficult to pour. (Today, oil is very サラサラとした in comparison.) Oil was sold by volume, which meant that it had to be poured into a suitable receptacle to be measured, which took a considerable amount of time. During that time, the peddlar (
ぎょうしょうにん
行商人
) would make idle conversation (
ざつだん
雑談
) with the customer which to a casual observer would seem like simple time-wasting.
