The term アイス is used to refer to the many different types of ice cream found in the freezer sections of supermarkets, convenience stores, corner stores and the like. This includes dairy varieties as well as ice candy varieties. Soft-serve ice cream is not called アイス in Japanese. This type of ice cream is called ソフトクリーム or ソフト for short.
Because アイス is derived from English, it is useful to know that some Japanese people may mistakenly use the English word 'ice' to refer to 'ice cream'.
Supermarkets and convenience stores generally stock a vast array of ice cream, including standard cup and cone types, ice candy, stick ice cream, as well as other varieties that are more common in the Japanese market.
