Following the pattern of many popular anime series,
きめつ
鬼滅
やいば
(Demon Slayer) originated as a manga series in 2016, running for four years in a weekly manga magazine. With an avid following amongst manga-reading fans, the anime adaptation gained instant popularity after arriving on television screens. After the release of a sequel film in 2020, it became a cultural phenomenon. In Japan, Kimetsu no Yaiba merchandise dominated store displays, children donned green and black checkered face masks; the pattern of the ‘haori’ that protagonist Tanjiro wears, and discussions referencing the series could be heard on TV programs of all genres.
Kimetsu no Yaiba’s popularity, as can be said for many such works of popular culture, most likely lies in its themes and messages. Its central character, Tanjiro, is positioned to battle an incessant darkness in the face of sudden great loss. Viewers are taken on Tanjiro’s journey to becoming a demon slayer; a journey in which we see vulnerability, strength, friendship, love, hardship, perseverance and growth. The series explores the complexities of both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ characters, often through the empathetic lens of Tanjiro.
As the title Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) indicates, the series is not short of gory scenes. But amongst the gore is a fascinating story, that for many, seems to have inspired hope in the human spirit and the greater good. It has come at a time in the world when hope and inspiration is welcomed more than ever.
