Festivals are a unique aspect of Japanese culture. By some estimates, there are as many as 300,000 festivals a year in Japan, as there are many regional and local festivals, and many temples hold several a year. Around the country, certain key festivals such as the 雪祭り (snow festival) in Sapporo or the キリコ祭り (lantern festival) on the Noto Peninsula have taken on national prominence and attract many visitors. Additionally, every year, certain key dates are celebrated with nationwide festivals, such as the 雛祭り (doll festival) in March, or the 七夕祭り (star festival) in July.
