あまり + negative adjective or あまり + negative verb means 'not much'. For example:
However, the meaning can be reversed with the use of a positive adjective or verb, and sometimes the addition of にも for emphasis. For example:
verb plain form + あまり or noun + の + あまり + X also expresses the opposite idea that too much of something caused X. For example:
あまり can also be written, less commonly, in kanji: 余り.
