さすが(に) is often used to acknowledge the connection between an outcome and one's ability. It generally has positive connotations, but it can have negative connotations, particularly when used in the context of someone's failings.
さすが can also be used as an equivalent of the English 'be that as it may' - in other words, to express the idea that while a foregoing phrase or sentence may be the case, something else is also true / important etc. For example:
Historically さすが was written with kanji as 流石, but this is uncommon in modern usage.
