For detailed instructions, see the Component builder how to guide.
To find any kanji, first try to identify the components it is made up of. Once you have identified any component, search for it in any of three ways:
  1. Draw it in the drawing area
  2. Type the name in the text area
  3. Look for it in the list
Example: look up 漢
  • Notice that 漢 is made of several components: 氵 艹 口 夫
  • Draw any of these components (one at a time) in the drawing area, and select it when you see it
  • Alternatively, look for a component in the list. 氵 艹 口 each have three strokes; 夫 has four strokes
  • If you know the meanings of the components, type any of them in the text area: water (氵), grass (艹), mouth (口) or husband (夫)
  • Keep adding components until you can see your kanji in the list of matches that appears near the top.
Kanshudo Component Builder Drawing Help

The Kanshudo Component Builder can recognize any of the 416 components listed in the chart below the drawing area. Tips:
  • Draw a component in the center of the area, as large as you can
  • Try to draw the component as it appears in the kanji you're looking up
  • Don't worry about stroke order or number of strokes
  • Don't draw more than one component at a time

The particle し is used to link multiple states into a list, with the suggestion the list is incomplete. It is very similar to や, but where や is only used for nouns, し can also be used for adjectives or relative clauses. It is often used when each clause describes a state of being.
noun + (です or だ) + し
すんばらしい
つま
すんばらしい
ははおや
母親

She's a wonderful wife, and a wonderful mother.
な adjective + (です or だ) + し
かのじょ

ねっしん
熱心
です
しんらい
信頼
できるから
まか
せましょう

She's passionate and I trust her, so let's leave it in her hands.
い adjective + し
あなたかわいい
しんせつ
親切
です
You are both pretty and kind.
verb plain or ます form + し
えいご

きな

いる
Some students like English, and others like physics.
わたし
ちち
たばこ
煙草
わない
さけ
まない

My father neither smokes nor drinks.
The stem form of する is also し. However, In this usage, し is functioning as a particle, so it can follow the verb する:
ずつう
頭痛
するせきでも
くる
しんでいます

I have a headache and I am suffering from a cough.
When し follows a する verb without the する, it may be the stem form of する and simply functioning to join the next phrase, as opposed to delineating elements in a list. Typically this would also be translated with 'and', however, so the meaning is not usually ambiguous. Consider the following, for example:
ちち
しつぎょう
失業
さらに
わる
こと
はは
びょうき
病気
なってしまった
Father has lost his job, and what's worse, Mother has fallen ill.
Note that the subject of each clause must be marked with は, not が, because the use of し makes it possible for the clauses to have different subjects.
