Grammar detail: せよ
せよ - archaic volitional
Tweet
My current mastery of this grammar:
verb stem
+ せよ
is the archaic volitional form. This form is commonly used as an imperative, evoking a somewhat formal or archaic sound. It is commonly seen for example in exam instructions.
The following example illustrates a common situation. Most modern する verbs have evolved from their archaic counterpart 〜す, which becomes 〜せよ in this form. (In other words, せよ is not a form of する but of 〜す.)
