そして means 'and', often in the sense of 'and then'. It typically follows the て form of a verb.
わたし
おどろ
いて
そして
かな
しく
なった
I was surprised and became sad.
そうして is actually formed from そう and して, the て form of する. So it literally means 'doing thus' (referring to whatever was previously described). It is also possible to say こうして (doing this), ああして (doing that), and of course どうして ('doing how', which actually becomes the English 'why' or 'how come').
