だと can be used as a way to quote someone indicating that you find whatever was said surprising or unbelievable. If written it might be translated into English simply with the 'interrobang' (the ?! combination), or with something like "... you say?!" or "... if that's the case ...".

Used in this way, だと can follow anything - typically the exact words quoted, or a plain form version.
Note that だと may also appear when a clause ending in だ (the plain form of です meaning 'is') is followed by the particle と. In this context, the combination だと has no special meaning.
