ご飯(ごはん)and 米(こめ)
225 words
Both ご
はん
and
こめ
are common words for rice. However, they are used in different contexts.
はん
(or
ごはん
御飯
- the ご is an honorific prefix) technically means 'cooked rice'. However, it is also a general term for a meal. Hence we have
あさごはん
朝ご飯
(breakfast),
ひるごはん
昼ご飯
(lunch), and
ゆうはん
夕飯
(dinner), which literally mean morning, noon and evening rice.
飯 is an interesting kanji - why does 'against' (反) 'food' (食) lead to 'boiled rice'? It turns out it relates to the
くんよみ
訓読み
Japanese reading, めし. めし has the same meaning as ご飯 in modern Japanese, but it actually comes from
し, which is the stem form of 召す, a polite word with multiple meanings, including 'invite' and 'dine'. 飯 originally had a completely different reading, but it acquired the reading めし to allow use of the word めし meaning food to be differentiated from the other meanings of 召し, which in turn gave the kanji 飯 the associated new meaning. As time passed the meaning stuck, but the
おんよみ
音読み
reading became more common.
こめ
is the technical term for uncooked rice, so it is used in recipes etc.
米 is an easy kanji to remember because it looks like scattered grains of rice. The Kanshudo will also help you remember the components that make up 米: "the eight (丷) trees (木) are rice plants".
