Alas, the Japanese did not manage to protect the trade name 'wagyu', in the way the French protected 'champagne' (the English experienced a similar problem with 'cheddar'). So now it is not uncommon to see 'American wagyu' across the US (although unfortunately it is not as common for the quality to be at Japanese levels ...).
