The き form is an archaic form of
れんたいけい
連体形
(noun-modifying form) of some adjectives. In modern Japanese, the 連体系 form ends in い, and is the same as the dictionary form. The き form is still seen in modern Japanese as a way of creating the impression of archaic or highly literary speech, and persists in one or two terms such as いと
愛
しき.The transition from き (and other sounds in other archaic grammatical forms) to い is known as イ
おんびん
音便
.Examples:
いと 愛 しき | dear |
くろ 黒 き | black |
ふか 深 き | deep |
きいろ 黄色 き | yellow |
