こんな, そんな and あんな are all used to mean 'such ~' (such a thing, such a situation etc). They are used instead of the usual particles この (this), その (that with a specific target), あの (that with no specific target). They are followed directly by a noun or an adjective:
In some cases the English 'this' (or 'that') might be an acceptable translation, but only in situations where 'this kind of thing' is implied:
When the particle is used with an adverb, に is added:
