Yodan is a name for a classical Japanese form of verb which has largely been superseded by the modern
ごだん
五段
verbs.
As with 五段 verbs, the name refers to the number of stem endings that can be added to a verb stem. For each verb stem (represented by the last syllable of the dictionary form), there are four possible endings, using the sounds あ, い, う (the dictionary form) and え.
In other words, the く of
く can be modified to 書か~, 書き~ and 書け~ to form different constructions. This is the same as modern 五段 conjugation, except that no form using 書こ~ exists.
