Grammar detail: Yodan 四段(よだん)form verbs
My current mastery of this grammar:
Yodan is a name for a classical Japanese form of verb which has largely been superseded by the modern
ごだん
語段
verbs.As with 語段 verbs, the name refers to the number stem endings for each of the stems. For each of the stems (represented by the last syllable of the dictionary form), there are four possible endings, using the sounds あ, い, う and え.
In other words, the く of
か
書
く can be modified to 書か~, 書き~ and 書け~ to form different constructions. This is the same as modern 語段 conjugation, except that no form using 書こ~ exists.See also:
