In classical Japanese, the particle が was used instead of the modern の.
くめ
ちち
ふで
はこびすこし
くる
いだされなかった

Okume detected not even the slightest bit of sloppiness in her father’s brushstrokes.
This is from the famous novel
よあけまえ
夜明け前
(Before the Dawn) by (1872–1943).
Here we see
ちち
ふで
(father's brush). In modern Japanese, this would be
ちち
ふで
. Notice how the contemporary possessive の was already in use - it's used in the same sentence:
ちち
ふで
のはこび (progress of [her] father's brush). Modern Japanese would simply repeat the の, arguably leading to a slightly less nuanced presentation.
This use of が can still be found in such words as (my; our), which is commonly seen in words such as (my/our country = Japan) and (my/our home) today.
くに
しょうしゃ
商社
せかい
世界
またにかけて
しょうばい
商売
する
Our trading companies do business all over the world.
いかに
そまつ
粗末
であろう
まさ
ところ
ない
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.
