In Japanese, various words can be used to turn verbs or adjectives into noun phrases - ie, phrases which function as nouns. These words are known as 'nominalizers', or in Japanese.
The most common examples are もの and こと (which refer for example to 'the act' of doing something, the 'state of being' something), ということ, とき (the time of doing something), and ところ (the location of doing something).
