へ John Goes to Japan by Kawamoto Kazuko

In this short reading, follow a chance introduction between two fellow train riders.
The grammar of this reading is suitable for absolute beginners of Japanese. However, as is commonly the case even with beginner texts, you will encounter several words which are very common, but that you would not be required to learn at the absolute beginner level. For example:
  • 出します take out
  • 同じ the same
  • ええ yes
  • 聞きました asked (past tense of 聞きます, ask)
  • よ (for emphasis)
  • だれか somebody
  • あっ wow
  • わあ oh
  • まど window
  • こちら this, here (polite expression)
  • せき seat
It's good practice to get used to understanding sentences in which you don't know all the words. The words above are very common, and starting to familiarize yourself with them in context will help you learn them later.
These and all other words used are explained under each sentence when you click it. Use the KANJI AND WORDS section to get a comprehensive list of all words and kanji used in any of the readings in the library.

This text has been selected to suit reading level: Beginner.
However, it includes some vocabulary and phrases that you would not necessarily be expected to know at that level. We believe knowledge of such vocabulary and phrases is beneficial at any stage of Japanese language learning, as they are commonly used in everyday language.
Many of the readings in the Reading Corner, such as this one, have additional notes in the introduction. The notes often provide extra information that will help you get more out of the text, including links to articles in the Grammar library.
