Grammar detail: verb plain form vs polite form
My current mastery of this grammar point:
The plain form of a verb, also known as the dictionary form, is used in informal situations.
In polite conversation, the ます form of verbs is usually used.
| plain form | polite form | meaning |
で 出 る | で 出 ます | to leave, to go out |
た 食 べる | た 食 べます | to eat |
い 行 く | い 行 きます | to go |
The pattern for creating the plain form varies depending on the verb grouping. See Ichidan 一段 (いちだん) 'る' form verbs and Godan 五段(ごだん)'う' form verbs for more detail.
See Verb - polite forms for detail on creating the polite form.
It is generally best to learn the plain form of a verb, since many grammar structures require knowledge of the plain form. Mastering key conjugations of the plain form (present, past, negative and negative past) early in your studies will benefit you greatly.
