This sentence is somewhat ambiguous. The form と思っていました (I was thinking that) could be used literally - for example, the speaker is saying after the fact that s/he had wanted to interview the pianist. But, depending on context, this could also be a polite way of expressing the desire to interview the pianist ahead of time to someone who could set up the interview. The same kind of ambiguity can occur in English - for example, there could be various possible contexts for "I was thinking that she might like to go for dinner with me."
